TRANMERE‘S youngsters last night booked their place in the next stage of the E-on FA Youth Cup with a well deserved victory over Grimsby Town.
Rovers had to wait until the 84th minute for the goal, when Terry Gornell’s shot from 18 yards took a deflection past the home keeper.
But generally Tranmere bossed the game.
The back four of Luke Denson, Louis Corrigan, Ryan Mitchell and Ash Taylor were excellent throughout and it meant Shane McWeeeny in goal hardly had a save to make throughout the 90 minutes.
Rovers could have won by a greater margin with Josh Macauley, Tom Beahon and Gornell getting in other good attempts.
“It was an excellent team performance and very satisfying for everyone,” said coach Shaun Garnett.
Tranmere Rovers’ reserves match against Blackpool Reserves was called off and will be rearranged at later date.
Tranmere Rovers Youth: McWeeney, Denson, Corrigan, Mitchell, Taylor, Beahon, Blundell, Moran. Macauley, Gornell, Thorne (Wilson 88). Subs: Kennedy, Richardson, Jones, MacKrath.
