Beat Vale to stay in play-off running

ROVERS got the win they badly needed last Saturday against Bournemouth and remain within touching distance of the play-off places.

In atrocious conditions with the pitch just about playable the team put in one of their most assured home performances of the season to take the points.

It was the kind of day when you might have expected the ball to spend a large proportion of time in the air yet Rovers mastered the waterlogged pitch, kept the ball on the floor and forced the visitors into defensive errors.

Having struggled in front of goal in the league in recent weeks it was good to see both Calvin Zola and Chris Greenacre on the scoresheet while Steve Jennings capped off a fine individual display to put the finishing touch on Calvin’s goal- bound effort.

Elsewhere both loanees put in solid displays with wide man Jennison Myrie-Williams a threat throughout. Hopefully both players will remain at Prenton Park for longer than their initial month.

A non-Tranmere sideline emerged from last weekend that is worthy of mention. Cherries defender Paul Telfer, who had to leave the field injured, has voluntarily cancelled his contract to help the cash-strapped South coast club out on learning he needs surgery and will be unable to play again this season. It’s a rare gesture in these days when players generally receive a bad press when it comes to financial matters.

This afternoon it’s a trip to the Potteries to face Port Vale.

Having been well and truly ‘giant-killed’ in the FA Cup by Chasetown during the week Vale’s confidence will be low and this is a very winnable game for Rovers.
