Moore salutes display as the season’s best

MANAGER Ronnie Moore described Tranmere’s 2-0 win at Leeds United as “probably our best all-round performance of the season.”

Second-half goals by Jennison Myrie-Williams and new signing Ian Moore enabled Rovers to post a fourth consecutive victory and return to the League One play-off zone for the first time since November.

Moore said: “I was very pleased with the way we played in front of the big crowd. We passed the ball well, dealt with everything they threw at us and limited them to couple of chances.

“We changed one or two things today. I think we have the pace to get around the back of teams now if we put the ball in the right areas.”

Tranmere’s emphatic victory spoiled the Elland Road welcoming party for Leeds’ new manager Gary McAllister.

But Moore was cautious about reading too much into a victory over a home side adjusting to the loss of previous manager Dennis Wise and the contrasting methods of McAllister.

Moore said: “We are not getting carried away. It is a game won, the fourth in a row and it puts us where we want to be, in the play-off places.

“We have another big game against Leyton Orient next Saturday so we will enjoy the week and hope we can put in another performance like this one.

“The players have to start believing they are a good side, capable of beating anyone in our division. We knew where Leeds weaknesses were and we tried to exploit them. I think we did that all afternoon.”

Moore added: “The problem for Gary McAllister is that he did not have long enough to work with the players. That was a big plus for us. They had a back four that probably hadn’t worked together before.”

Moore paid tribute to the contribution of midfielder Steve Jennings.

He said: “I thought Jenno was brilliant. He was all over the place, running, passing and making great tackles.”

The manager’s son Ian marked his return to Tranmere, after an 11-year absence, with a headed goal that clinched the victory.

Ronnie Moore said: “I was pleased for Ian because he worked hard when he was a player at Leeds and did not get a fair crack of the whip in my view, by being played on the right wing. If you put him down the middle he will get goals.”

Moore revealed Jennison Myri Williams, scorer of the brilliant solo goal for Tranmere’s opener on 61 minutes, had been unhappy about his first-half contribution.

“Jennison came in and said he had not done anything during the first half, it was like we were playing with 10 men,” Moore said.

“But he is always liable to do what he did for the goal. It was a great finish after he cut inside the full-back. The second goal gave us that little bit of comfort.”
