Town caretaker Murphy stays upbeat

MANAGERLESS Huddersfield Town insist the future is looking bright on and off the field at the Galpharm Stadium as they prepare to play host to Tranmere tomorrow.

The Terriers announced record first-day season ticket sales this week for the 2008-09 campaign. They have been offering season tickets for just £100 as part of the club’s centenary celebrations and 1,000 were sold on the opening day – with a record 35% to new purchasers.

The flood of business was helped by Huddersfield’s 1-0 win over Yorkshire rivals Leeds on Tuesday.

Caretaker manager Gerry Murphy believes the club can “take off” if they find the right manager to succeed Andy Ritchie, who left the club at the start of the month.

Murphy, a long-serving youth coach who does not want the first-team job on a permanent basis, said: “The manager’s position is the big one here. I think the club is ready to take off. We have some great players and I have seen some of them come through the ranks since they were boys.”
