PADDY Flynn flew over for a brace of tries on his debut but that couldn’t stop Barrow from pulling off the shock of the round in the Northern Rail Cup.
Under strength Widnes were made to pay for some sloppy errors by Barrow and the Co-operative National League 2 side fully deserved the victory.
Widnes didn’t appear to have the same confidence and guile of a side who had plundered more than 150 points in three games and they couldn’t make their mark throughout the contest.
Barrow looked the brighter of the two sides and they deservedly took an 18-4 lead into the break.
The Raiders raced to a 6-0 lead after only two minutes of play as Brett McDermott shot over to finish off a sweeping Barrow move.
Danny Hill hit back for the visitors on 10 minutes after he burst onto a deft inside ball from Beswick, but the returning Tim Hartley failed to land the extras.
Widnes simply couldn’t get going and they missed the leadership and direction of skipper Mark Smith who was forced to sit it out due to a two game ban.
Michael Backhouse stretched the home side’s lead further when he finished off in the corner and when Andy Ellis touched down the Raiders could start to think of victory.
The Viking’s did have some golden opportunities to register tries but they failed to convert pressure into points at crucial stages of the game.
Fynn touched down on 56 minutes and followed that up with another effort on 65 minutes.
Hartley added the extras but Widnes could not kick on as the Raiders soaked up pressure.

Widnes’s Irish international prop-forward Martin McLaughlin is to have a troublesome shoulder operated on which may keep him out for three months.
