'Business normal' on big match day

Most employers in London are not making any special arrangements to let their staff watch England's crucial World Cup game with Slovenia on Wednesday because they cannot afford to lose any productivity, according to a new report.

A survey of more than 140 firms in the capital showed that two-thirds were not planning any changes to their daily routine despite the importance of the game to England fans.

Half of those surveyed by the London Chambers of Commerce said they would not allow workers to watch the afternoon game, although bigger companies were more likely to screen the match at work.

Peter Bishop, deputy chief executive of the London Chamber of Commerce, said: "While many employers will be allowing staff to cheer on England, for some companies, particularly smaller ones, they simply can't afford a drop-off in productivity.

"People may wonder what impact just one match could have on the office day, but when you consider that London has a huge international workforce, many working hours could be lost as some staff will want to watch a team other than England play."
