Liverpool’s domestic violence calls rose in wake of World Cup defeat

MERSEYSIDE police received 145 referrals about domestic violence on the day that England lost 4-1 to Germany in the World Cup.

The number of domestic abuse reports fell overall compared to the 2006 World Cup with an average 10.9 offences per day reported to police, compared to 19.5 incidents per day four year sago.

However, the number of referrals to the Family Crime Investigation Unit (FCTU) rose significantly on the days England played. The referrals throughout the tournament range from a low of 44 to a high of 145.

Detective Inspector Sally Johnson, from the FCTU, said: "While evidence has shown that domestic abuse increases during times of major sporting events, it happens across Merseyside every single day and we want to reach victims of domestic abuse and their friends and families to let them know that there is help available all year round. We want to let anyone in an abusive relationship know how to get the support they need to be able to get out of that situation and start re-building their lives.”
