According to the Daily Star, Everton are battling Blackburn and Newcastle to sign Benfica midfielder Angel Di Maria.

Argentine international Di Maria, 20, had an outstanding season for the Portuguese giants last season and has been attracting interest from a number of top European clubs.

Di Maria, who is known as 'The Little Angel', has admitted he would love the chance to play in the Premier League or La Liga and is hoping to show he can compete at the highest level.

He said: "I want to make the jump to England or Spain.

"I believe that my first year in Portugal and Europe has been good and I finished the season playing at a very high level."

RUMOUR RATING Two stars. If he can occupy the holding role, he might be on the club's radar, but at 20 it would be a lot of responsibility on a young player's shoulders.
