The club requested help from volunteers yesterday to place extra covers and heating equipment on the pitch to supplement the existing covers that have been in place since the game on Sunday.

“We’re doing everything possible to ensure the game goes ahead,” said chairman Mike Rance. “The forecasters reckon this cold spell will remain with us beyond the weekend, so we’ve decided to give the pitch some extra protection.”

With the transfer window opening today, Everton are bracing themselves for an expected bid from Arsenal for Mikel Arteta as manager Arsene Wenger seeks to replace the injured Cesc Fabregas.

However, the Londoners will be given no encouragement with the Goodison outfit having already stated they have no intention of selling any star players in January.
