Working Day: Ian James

12.45pm: There are so many people involved in this auction – it’s all about delivering to the buyer and seller on the day. This is the point when the nerves really kick in. I am pacing around the room, constantly keeping an eye on the door to see who walks in and out.

1pm: The bidding is about to begin and the room is buzzing. It’s a great venue and it can hold a lot of people. After a head count, we have a real good number of people here. That’s made everyone feel really good and that’s even before we’re under way.

1.30pm: I’ve just taken a look at my watch for the first time since I began, and I can’t believe half an hour has passed.

We’re onto Lot number 15, and it’s fair to say I’m squeezing every last ounce out of the bidding for each lot, which is crucial for the seller.

2pm: The auction has finished and a number of clients are approaching me to discuss a few properties further. As the reserve price has not been met on a couple of lots, there is always a possibility that negotiations can be made.

3pm: The team gather to have a chat about how they feel the day went. We all agree it’s been a really good auction.

4pm: Back to the office to continue with other work I have to complete. Usually pick up all the telephone messages that have been left and try and return the calls before close of business.

5.30pm I have something to eat after arriving home, watch television and catch up with the children.

9.30pm: I’m out for the count. It’s been a long day with excitement, nervousness and all other types of emotions. I love my job and I can’t wait for the next auction.
