We’ll toil for success - but don’t expect tolls to drop

He claimed they would win seats in Southport, Wirral and Sefton if “we work hard”.

“You can’t win a General Elec-tion without winning in Cumbria, Lancashire and Merseyside.

He said the party now controls eight councils in the North West.

“It is not true to say we are a southern-based party,” he added.

He said the party’s electoral success would depend on how voters judged their ability to deal with the cost of living, “social breakdown”, and crime.

When asked if the current economic climate favoured his party, the old Etonian said: “I don’t think it is good for anybody.

“I don’t want to win on the back of Labour’s failures. The key is building up trust.”

Mr Cameron visited Southport in the morning before visiting Weatherhead school, in Wallasey, last night, where he faced questions on issues ranging from euthanasia to abortion – he opposes the former, but can see the arguments, and supports the latter, but would prefer to see limits cut from 24 to 20 weeks.

He said he supports fox hunting – relevant, as he had faced a dozen protesters opposing its reintroduction on the way in, and one fierce questioner on the issue within the hall.
