A female resident on the road, who did not wish to be named, said: “My boyfriend came in the house and said there was a man lying in the road covered in blood.
“I thought maybe he had fallen over, but my boyfriend said it looked really serious and thought he might be dead.
“I was terrified and still am, really.
“This area is normally so quiet, I cannot think of anything like this in the past.
“It happened in the afternoon, with kids about and everything – how could someone do this?
“The area isn’t posh but it is a really nice place to live, most people own their own homes and it is a great place to bring up children.”
Landlady of the Claughton Hotel, Carol Brunt, where Mr McKenna was a regular, paid tribute to a “lovely man”, who would do anything for his family.
She said last night: “We are all still in shock. We didn’t put anything on last night because everyone was so upset, the atmosphere was awful.
“We knew him very well, Graham was such a lovely man, they were all a lovely family.
“He would have done anything for his wife and kids, he would come in here with them all the time because they were all so close.
“He had so many friends around here, he was a real community man and a huge Everton fan.
“It is such a sad loss.”
Claughton councillors last night issued a statement.
