Liverpool GPs praise public’s ‘sensible’ response to swine flu fears

LIVERPOOL’S doctors are praising the public for resisting the urge to inundate their GPs and other health centres with visits as the imminent pandemic spreads.

Dr Rob Barnett, secretary of Merseyside's Local Medical Committee, said: “At this point in time, people are being exceptionally sensible.

“There has been no particular alarm as yet but we will have to wait and see what develops.”

He said he was confident that Liverpool Primary Care Trust, which is co-ordinating Merseyside’s response to what is shortly likely to be confirmed as a pandemic, had the situation in hand.

GPs dealing with suspected patients have had access to gloves, aprons, masks and retrovirus drugs to fight the illness. But he said resources could become stretched if there was an upsurge in swine flu cases.

Liverpool medical company Kay’s is already importing masks to meet strong demand.
