THE gods were kind to the Liverpool International Tennis Tournament in Calderstones Park this year. After a near-monsoon in 2007, last week’s event stayed largely dry and the 2,500 corporate guests were not confined to the tent.

As ever, they were well looked after. For £125 a head, they got to guzzle unlimited wine, nosh on chicken and potatoes, and watch the likes of Ilie Nastase, Pat Cash and Martina Hingis cavort around the courts. However, the tournament still has some way to go to match the swankiness of Liverpool jeweller Boodle’s annual tennis challenge, which started yesterday at the exclusive Stoke Park, in Buckinghamshire. Top tables are an eye-watering £250,000. Mind you, for that you are helicoptered in, enjoy gourmet dinners and vintage Champagne, receive free Wimbledon finals tickets AND get to choose from £100,000 worth of gems and trinkets. Oh, and the players include Andy Murray, Andre Agassi and Andy Roddick....
