CHAMPERS and fine legged fillies were the order of the day at Nant-wich last Saturday, when the cream of the North West social scene gathered for the latest Cheshire Polo Club event. Present in the hospitality tent were Helen Marriott, head of divorce law at Liverpool’s Brabners Chaffe Street and her husband, Lee Marriott, an accountant with Baker Tilly and tax advisor to several Premiership footballers. The Marriotts could barely contain their joy when their ticket was pulled out of the raffle hat and Helen, below, gleefully made her way to the stage to collect her prize – a Ferrari Formula 1 racing jacket. Alas, she was not quite quick enough. The draw-master hadn’t realised she was about to stake her claim and another ticket was drawn out, leaving Ms Marriott empty-handed. She did the English thing and withdrew quietly without making a fuss. However, Mr Marriott was not impressed, and made their feelings known to organisers who promised to source them another jacket.

THE chaps from the Emerald Isle do know how to throw a party, and the Liverpool office of Bank of Ireland certainly lived up to that reputation last week. Guests at the launch of their new base at 20 Chapel Street were well fed and watered with Stranford scallops, roast beef, smoked salmon and Laurent Perrier Brut Cham-pagne and the local suits laid siege to the free bar. Neither the word “credit” nor “crunch” were to be heard. Then came time for the entertainment. Punters had been promised a spot of Fab-Fourness from a tribute act known as the Mersey Beatles. But there had clearly been some con-fusion during the booking as the band that showed up were in fact local veterans, The Merseybeats. They took to the stage to the sound of that well-known Irish anthem, er, Land of Hope and Glory.
