Cammell Laird
William Laird established the Birkenhead Iron Works in 1824 and merged with Johnson Cammell & Co. of Sheffield at the turn of the Twentieth century.
Cammell Laird went on to become of the most famous names in British shipbuilding, before being nationalised in 1977.
Cammell Laird returned to the private sector in 1986 but fell into receivership in April 2001.
The company was then reborn in January 2007 when Peel Holdings purchased the shipyard, to help facilitate the proposed Wirral Waters project, and has since gone on to win contracts with the Ministry of Defence.
In 2010 it was announced that Cammel Laird had received a £44m order for the flight decks of the Royal Navy's new aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth.
