Man killed in Queens Drive hit and run

POLICE are hunting the driver of a skip lorry after a pedestrian was killed in a suspected hit and run at one of Liverpool’s busiest road junctions. The unnamed man, believed to be in his 50s, was knocked down near the junction of Queens Drive and East Prescot Road, Stoneycroft, this afternoon. The driver of the lorry, which was travelling towards Childwall, failed to stop at the scene. Motorists faced continued traffic chaos tonight as forensic investigations began on the partly blocked road, with lengthy tailbacks in Old Swan and past Broadgreen hospital. The lorry, which may not have been carrying a skip, was last seen heading along Queens Drive in the direction of the Rocket pub. Carl Lopez, 34, saw the collision, which happened at just after 4pm, from the nearby Navigator pub. He said: “The lorry just carried on going and the body was just lying there in the road. I do not know if the driver knew he had hit someone. It was a big skip truck. “It has caused havoc with the traffic. This road is so busy at rush hour.” The man, whose next of kin were due to be informed tonight, was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident was the latest in a catalogue of collisions on the busy city road, which leads to and from the M62. Residents have called on police to enforce tougher speed restrictions. Linda Waterson, 58, said: “It does not surprise me in the slightest there has been another accident. “People drive along here as if they are still on the motorway. It is terribly dangerous. I have lived in the area for nine years, and in that time there have been countless accidents and deaths.” Alice Thompson, 59, of Queens Drive, added: “The speeds along here are so dangerous. “We do not know exactly what has happened here but the level of collisions and accidents suggests something does need to be done.” Police are appealing for details of the skip lorry including registration number, make, model, and colour or company name.
