The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra is the oldest surviving professional symphony orchestra in the UK. The society was founded in 1840 for the purpose of the pleasure of the moneyed merchant class in the town. Based at the Philharmonic hall on Hope Street in the city, the RLPO played a massive role in Liverpool securing and delivering the 2008 Capital of Culture programme. The RLPO is involved with many community-based activities and is also famous for its work with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Choir and Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Youth Orchestra. Today, more than 60 concerts per year are presented by the RLPO and Chief Conductor Vasily Petrenko has recently announced a contract extension that will keep with the RLPO until 2015.
