Phil Redmond: The proof that culture works

TODAY sees publication of the long-awaited Impacts 08 Report, which adds both academic rigour and validity to the headlines we have been spouting for the past few years. It will give our policy makers the evidence-based data they so often crave before making apparently obvious decisions.

Basically, culture works. It brings people and their cash to the region. It creates local heroes and role models. It reduces social costs. It builds self-esteem and wellbeing.

People who can and should, should now refocus on creating the environment for what the region has always done best: stimulating creative people who force cultural change. Local talent that changes the world. This time, through the digitally linked global marketplace, from the comfort of their own homes!

PS: If the Mancs want to put pressure on the Glazers, they should not boycott the beginnings of games as they are suggesting – but turn up early and refuse to go home. The extra policing costs alone would soon run down the balance sheet and make the business less attractive. Think Gandhi.
