ANYONE who uses the phrase “toe rag parents” knows they’re on the way to creating a bit of controversy.
Though Birkenhead MP Frank Field probably isn’t worried about that.
In an article this week, he argued that the biggest crisis facing Britain is that too many parents don’t have a clue how to raise children.
His answer – a GCSE in parenting – strikes me as one of those beautifully simple ideas . . . that’s just too simple to work.
If ever there was an example of a topic in which theory can’t replace practice, then this is it.
Ask any parent who’s read a child-rearing manual of any description – and then tried the reality.
This was brought into sharp focus for me when I read Gina Ford’s famous – or should I say infamous – Contented Little Baby Book while pregnant for the first time.
