Will Batchelor: Are we really saying ‘replacing the traffic light bulbs in Mauritius’?

HAVING now passed the centennial of the world’s greatest maritime disaster, it may be a fitting time to retire that phrase about “re-arranging the deck chairs on the Titanic”.

Don’t get me wrong, it is an excellent phrase. I just think it may be

time for a more contemporary reference to illustrate the concept of fretting over pointless trivia instead of tackling a major crisis.

But replace it with what? Well, I was at a loss until this week, when it emerged that we are replacing all the traditional traffic light bulbs in Mauritius with low-energy versions, to help reduce carbon emissions.

Well done guys. That will definitely stop the ice caps melting....or at least delay it for a good four seconds.

Verdict: Lexicon.
