HOWDY pardners! Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson’s saddle was certainly blazing over the weekend – although it was mudslinging rather than gunslinging on the horizon when he decided to go after that dastardly outlaw Richard Kemp.
The Mayor gave Cllr Kemp both barrels when accusing him of turning bandit on the budget working group and revealing the latest round of cuts before Mayor Joe’s Labour posse had been rounded up to be given the bad news (which he denies).
Liberal Democrat group leader Cllr Kemp, Mayor Joe suggested in an email that was promptly and proverbially nailed to the saloon door for all to see, was a “despicable” man.
One Town Hall colleague said to Mr B that this was “probably one of the nicest things anyone has said about him for some time”, but certainly Mayor Anderson was not in the mood for paying compliments.
Apparently, Big Joe could see him for what he was the first time he narrowed his eyes ahead of their first duel way back when.
However, Mr B is told, Mayor Joe’s statement in his email that “You forget in trying to kid me that you are trying to kid the kid that kidded Billy the Kid” may have sent a few tumbleweeds of dismay rolling through the Labour camp.
For, as many who keep a keen eye on Liverpool’s politics have suggested, Mayor Joe has just handed the Lib Dems a bounty.
After all, the ridicule to which former city leader Warren Bradley was exposed to after being compared to the sheriff of the ‘Lone Star State’ when Liverpool was ranked the worst financially performing authority in the country in 2008, it is now highly likely that the fedoras, chaps and spurs will be back making another appearance.
Mr B is told the Lib Dems are already mocking up their election leaflets for the 2016 Mayoral contest. Given Mayor Joe’s email effectively suggesting the Mayor is better at pulling the wool over people’s eyes than Cllr Kemp, it’s certainly an opportunity too good to miss.
But let’s not forget that there is every likelihood that, with the coalition in disarray and the number of Lib Dems on the council reducing at breakneck speed, Mayor Joe will have ridden them all out of town by 2016.
IT ISN’T only a good walk that golf has spoiled in the last few days.
Indeed the one leaked budget cut proposal that seems to have caused Mayor Joe to cancel the budget working party was to do with the potential closure of two municipal golf courses.
He fumed at Cllr Kemp that “I look forward to exposing you and your party in the weeks and months ahead.”
It will be interesting to see who is the quickest on the draw – the Mayor or Mr B – when it comes to that challenge.
RECENTLY Mr B highlighted how the public may have to submit to bag searches before entering Liverpool Town Hall.
Apparently there was a fear city leaders may have been subject to some kind of humiliating custard pie attack.
But with all this current golf course furore, the council’s “bunker mentality” has taken on a whole new meaning.
