Why can’t we care for our heritage?

IT IS very sad to read that the Royal Iris is in a sunken state at Woolwich.

I visited the former ferry boat a few years ago. It was a sad sight then.

How ironic that the long- established port of Liverpool seems incapable of caring for old ships for future generations. The demise of the Historic warships at Birkenhead and the saga of the Planet bar ship are recent examples of vessels that should have been kept.

The Royal Iris was unique and should have remained on Merseyside, where it was loved by generations of ferry passengers. Not only was it part of our maritime history but our Mersybeat history, too.
