WHEN the Chief Executive of a £1.3b Housing Foundation, claiming to have “always been well left of centre”, proposes using part of his Cosmopolitan group’s surpluses to send “youngsters from some of the poorest estates in Merseyside and Chester” to top public school Eton, the flat earth society immediately appears less wacky, and estate managers more entertainingly silly (Mersey Estate pupils get Eton Chance, Post, Jan 11).

IN RESPONSE to the letters published in the Daily Post on Monday by Nigel Ashton and Magwal, I wish to emphasise that I do not believe that punctuation, spelling and grammar are unimportant. THE experience of a recent referendum for an elected mayor in a small town supports Mike Cadwaller's request for more information on the subject (Letters, December 12). Of the nearly 30,000 people who voted in that referendum, few are likely to have known what they were voting for because it was unlikely that most would have read the draft constitution for rule by an elected mayor.
