A credit to all concerned

I FEEL that I really must respond to Charles Kersham’s denigration of the new Mann Island (Daily Post, June 29). While the actions of city planners in allowing such catastrophes as the 6 Sir Thomas Street and Josephine Butler House debacles are to be condemned, the new Mann Island is an enormous credit to all concerned. Good to see fact – not spin

LAURA DAVIS'S critical analysis on the legacy of Liverpool's 08 year (Daily Post, June 30) was refreshing. It was good to see an article based on hard facts, rather than the usual words that have been spun, re-spun and, just in case, spun again. Read

Colourful way to aid charity

I AM writing to thank all your readers for coming along to our special cancer memorial, held at the National Wildflower Centre, at Court Hey Park, throughout June. Read

It’s just one big mistake

I HAVE written in many times about Mann Island. I have watched as the biggest architectural mistake since the Second World War unfolded. It was only by chance that we made it through the 60s building boom with just a low-rise bus station on the Pier Head, only to find that, as soon as we get another upturn (now bust), we destroy our best asset. Tax threat to Scouts

MY CONGRATULATIONS to Environment Secretary Hilary Benn, in advance, for effectively closing down many of the Scout Groups in the area as many will find the new “rain tax'” charges operated by United Utilities an impossible burden. Read

Database safety fears

IN RESPONSE to the letter from Sarah Jones regarding ContactPoint. It is clear that Ms Jones has completely missed the point that was being made. As a parent, I am appalled that all this data is collated by the state without the parent or carer being informed. It is also common knowledge that the school family has also not been informed of ContactPoint. Read

Can we really believe them?

THE newly-appointed government minister for the North-West, Phil Woolas, wasted no time in his interview with the local press heaping praises on Liverpool as if it was the centre of the universe and pledged his body and soul for the good of the city, and, according to the report, the man is a bit of a tough nut. Fund will unite services

THE reality of busy 21st-century life means that it can be difficult to find enough hours in the day to fit everything in, so joining up vital services and making them easier to access is the order of the day. That is why I am delighted that my organisation – Partnerships for Schools – is managing a £200m fund on behalf of the Government to co-locate services for children and young people which will help transform lives and regenerate communities. Film label just a smokescreen

LIKE the film producers quoted in your article (Censors meet their match as film smoking curbs attacked – Daily Post, June 18) I 100 per cent disagree with the suggestion that we apply 18 certificates to films that show smoking. Read

Do we really want a future?

NEWS of further delays to the proposed relief road to the Port of Liverpool poses these questions once more. Read

Shame of Sahara crisis

LAST week, a high-level Downing Street delegation delivered a letter urging Gordon Brown take immediate steps to resolve the crisis in Western Sahara, now in its 33rd year. The letter, from President Mohamed Abdelaziz, of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, asks that Britain act immediately to help end the continuing occupation of Western Sahara by Morocco, in defiance of UN Security Council resolutions and the judgment of the International Court of Justice. Time for action over Europe

THE real message of the European election result has been overshadowed by the ongoing controversies over MPs’ expenses and the political survival of the Prime Minister. Read

One-sided view of Royal

IT IS unhelpful that local NHS Trusts present such a one-sided view of their options for renewal at the Royal. They have consistently favoured its demolition, reducing its beds and having all patients nursed in single rooms. Read

Apathy let BNP win a seat

I WONDER how many of the people watching in horror as the BNP won representation in our name, failed to vote? We now have a fascist voice in the European Parliament, thanks partly to the complicated PR system, but also to startling political apathy. Read

Time we paid our MPs more

AS THE election results roll in we will see all sorts of spin from the various parties proclaiming them a success or not as bad as feared. Read

Let’s get up off our knees

IN THE early 1890s Liverpool was losing trans-Atlantic trade due to commercial developments in Manchester and Southampton. Liverpool’s businessmen, along with the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board, rose to the challenge, decided what to do and planned and built Riverside Stadium in 1895. Read

Not the party they voted for

FOUR years ago my mother was taken into hospital and for nine weeks she lay in a coma. After six weeks, I was contacted by the hospital telling me my mother could not go home as she required 24 hour care, and would I find her a place as soon as possible. Read

Are they worth the money?

I AM curious to know how an MP’s expenses are worked out. For instance, take two local members of parliament both belonging to the same party both living within 20 miles of each other. Between them they have been paid over £330,000 out of the public purse. Read

We will all fight landfill
