IT IS hard to imagine a city in Europe with more going on than Liverpool this weekend. The European Capital of Culture today comes into its own as a destination that really does offer something for everyone.
The number of Capital of Culture events and their broad appeal means there is something for every taste and, equally important, every pocket.
The cultural highlights of this weekend include the Klimt exhibition at Tate Liverpool, which opened to the public last night after Thursday’s glittering launch party.
Meanwhile, George Harrison’s widow, Olivia, and the Liverpool Culture Company are presenting a special screening of “Concert for George” at Fact tonight, and Stella McCartney is unveiling her eagerly-anticipated autumn/winter 08 collection at the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts tomorrow.
And, of course, Sir Macca himself will play the Liverpool Sound concert at Anfield tomorrow.
But there will also be a host of other diverse events taking place across the city region this weekend – as well as the first weekend shopping extravaganza at Liverpool One – and we can even expect to see some sunny weather.
This weekend is, as council leader Warren Bradley rightly points out, an amazing package of events and a perfect curtain-raiser for the summer programme, which will include the Tall Ships arrival and The Open Championship at Royal Birkdale.
Next week, we see the arrival of 600 passengers aboard the next cruise ship to call at Liverpool, the draw for the Liverpool International Tennis Tournament and a host of other events
Liverpool has enjoyed one of the most exciting weeks in its recent history; a time of rebirth and celebration which should leave everyone feeling optimistic for the Culture Year events which are yet to unfold.
This is, as the slogan says, Our Time and Our Place; this weekend, it is the perfect time to celebrate that fact.
