He watched the faces of the little children of Magda Goebbels, wife of the propaganda minister Joseph, peering from dark coats before they were poisoned by their parents. “It pressed my heart,” he said.

On April 29, the day before Hitler and his new bride Eva Braun committed suicide, von Loringhoven left the bunker and shook the Fuehrer’s hand for the last time. He saw envy in his eyes.

After the war, von Loringhoven, twice married with two children, worked in publishing and then rejoined the German army, becoming a lieutenant-general.
